Mission

The mission of the La Salle Educational Center is defined in its website:


The La Salle Educational Center, Homestead is a Catholic Community Center following in the traditions of The Brother of the Christian Schools, serving low income and agricultural families in the South Dade Community. The center offers and opportunity for an integral formation through education, faith formation, vocational skills and sports.


History

In December of 1989, under the direction of Fr Jose Joaquin Espino, Miguel Manzanero, Javier Camps and Father Raul Pérez Ros, all alumni of La Salle schools, visited the Santa Ana Mission in Naranja, carrying clothes and food. At that time Fr. Espino was the Pastor at the St. Ann Mission, which comprises the 3 migrant camps in South Dade. He explained to them the need for volunteers to teach religious education at these camps, and this work began inmediately.

In May of 1991, the youth from the camps expressed their desire for a safe refuge to be afterschool, a place where they could do their homework and where they could improve their educational skills. Sister Soledad Mendoza from the order of the Guadalupana of the Holy Spirit and other volunteers accepted the challenge and the Center was created. The initial work was done in a trailer, but in 1993 a vacated building in Homestead was restored by volunteers and it bacame the new center. Skill trininig classes and other activites were gradually introduced.


Skill Training Programs

The Computer Literacy program helps with computer-related office skills, including hardware and software intoductions and instruction on programs like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.


The 8-week Sewing Vocational Program is intended to meet the needs of the beginner but also advance the skills of a higher level seamstress. It meets on Saturdays.


After School Program

The La Salle Center After School program is open to children Kindergarten thru Middle School. The center offers an academic environment for students to get assistance with homework, projects and technology, including internet access. Individual mentoring gets special attention. The center us in contact with the schools and serve has community liasons and advocates. Summer camps are also available.

Parents Club and Wellness Workshops

The Parents Club provides workshops for parents so as to learn, share, and connect with other parents in the area. The Center Parent Wellness Workshops are aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle changes to all caregivers who have influence in the daily life of school aged children. Baby sitting is available during the workshops.
